Hi if anyone needs a url checking free utility, try mine it is very small
you can get it at http://www.masswire.com/urlcheck.zip

Joseph, before downloading and installing a program, it's always nice
to read about it first. You might want to set up a website about it
and also submit it to some good freeware sites like WebAttack (now
called Snapfiles), Nonags, Freeware Home, Freeware World, etc.

I've been "holding" this note of yours, John, in the expectation that
there would be a followup from someone with more info. But looks like
no luck. :-(

I would really like an "URL check utility" that would automatically
scan though my "Favorites" and test them to see if they still work;
but I'm a bit too paranoid to try one just because some bloke I don't
know a thing about says "use this"!

I suppose someone has to do it first, but I'll leave that testing to
those who have machines dedicated to such risky behaviour.

The main features of a useful URL checker would be:

1. Test all links in the Favorites/Bookmarks collection automatically.

2. List all that are "broken" (perhaps with some diagnosis?) with
options to delete them as a group or separately.

3. List all duplicate links (i.e. where the actual URL is referred to
under different names and/or is stored in different folders) with a
convenient set of options to tidy things up.

Cheers, Phred.

What are you going to do about sites that are down temporarily ?

Guess it could just run auto over a few weeks etc.

Yeah, that's a potential problem -- one reason I queried whether it
would be possible to include some sort of "diagnostic report" in the
output. Though I guess there's no way to distinguish "down" from
"gone".

On the other hand, there may be scope for "broken" links to be tested
further back in the levels, and a report could include that sort of
info (e.g. www.aaa.com/crap/spreads/around may be broken, but the link
up to www.aaa.com/crap may still be active, and that may be useful to
know).
Guess it could just run auto over a few weeks etc.

Yep, I guess that's one approach. Alternatively, you could just
isolate the "broken" links (rather than deleting them immediately) and
test them again later when convenient.
