A friend of mine loaded an old McAfee Firewall program,
version 2.01 on his Win 98 PC. It would not shutdown as it
would reboot whenever he shutdown. I remove the Firewall
through Add/Remove programs, wrong move. It turns out that
I should have removed it through a special program. I
tried to reinstall the program but it will not reinstall.
Now the system shuts down correctly but he can't get the
Internet Explorer to work. I talked to the ISP support and
we can Ping using the numeric address without any problems
but the alpha names do not work. He said that the Winsock
was damaged. I replaced the Winsock.dll file but that
didn't help. How do I go about getting rid of all the
hooks that the Firewall installed? Can you direct me to
some help on this problem. He doesn't want to pay Mcafee
at their rates per minute. I checked Mcafee Web page but
they have a uninstall procedure for version 4 that doesn't
work for 2.1. Also how can I convert a URL name to an IP
address? Is there a program that will do this? This would
help to get his e-mail working.
Any help will be appreciated as us old guys live by our e-
mail and Internet.
