HI,

I installed Windows server 2003. i am using cable
internet so i didn't have to set anything. i could go
online right away after i installed 2003 as a workgroup.

Then i installed Active directory which required me to
install DNS server.

Before installing AD and DNS, my windows 2003 got ip
address from router and it's my DHCP server also. i have
3 machine with 2 xp and one 2003.

So finally while setting up DNS it asked me static IP
address and i wrote down static ip address. Default
gateway would be my router's IP address and DNS server
would be either private IP address or ISPs DNS ip
address.

after than i was asked forward lookup zone, i set but
didn't work out well.

finally, i lost my internet connection after installed
everything. my dns server can't talk to router anymore.
if i use Automatic IP address, it clears out all the ip
address and uses 169.254.0.0

i ran dcpromo and uninstall DNS server but still didn't
help at all and lost internet connectivity. i never had
that problem when i was installing windows 2000 server
and dns server but i got this time.

i tried to setup DHCP in 2003 which doesn't require but
still didn't work.

here's some info and my questions
1. My router is my DHCP ranging 192.168.1.100 -
192.168.1.150
2. Router is 192.168.1.1

Question
I am doing at home so 1 server and 2 clients.....

1. what static IP address should i write down if i am
asked for DNS.
2. what should i do if it can't connect to
router/internet?
3. i setup forward lookup zone to my dns server, is that
correct? it worked in 2000 but somehow got problem with
2003.

or please write down all correct steps about configuring
DNS while installing Active Directory so i can connect to
router and go online.

This would help me lot for my learning process.

Please reply me to: sweeturvish-at-yahoo.com

Thank you so much,

I appreciated your help!

DCPROMO probably created a "." forward lookup zone, delete that and DNS will
be back in business.
In Active Directory make sure all machines point to the DC for DNS,
including the DC.
