Greetings.

I'm trying to upgrade a W2K computer into WinXP Pro. When
setup reboots, I get a "NTLDR is Missing, Press ALT CRTL
DEL to restart" error. This error does not go away after
reboot. The harddisk is not partitioned in anyway.

I've searched the Knowledge Base but nothing seems
relevent. There's an article on the exact same NTLDR
error but that refers only to upgrades from Win95, 98 or
ME.

Urgently need a fast reply as I need to finish this in a
few hours. Help is greatly appreciated.

Since the drive is not partitioned, try a Clean Installation this way:
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Disconnect network/modem cable.
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.

Enable or install firewall BEFORE connecting network cable.

Install ALL Critical Windows Updates:
Start/All Programs/Windows Update

After you are finished, you will need to load the appropriate drivers.

If your computer was shipped with Windows XP, these procedures may or
may not apply.
Check your manual or contact the computer manufacturer for more
details.

The HDD has to be partitioned, even if it is only 1 partition, to be able to install any OS to it. I.E. without a partition there can be no file system.

Did you format the drive to install XP? Did you create a partition?

Unfortunately, I am cannot afford to format the computer
in this situation. All data must be kept intact. Are
there any other workarounds?

You wouldn't happen to have a disk in the floppy drive do
you by chance?
If not,try the following:
Boot to recovery console.
copy ntldr and ntdetect.com from the cd rom to the root
of the C: drive.
Type fixboot c: and hit enter.
Say yes to the prompt.
