Hi
My main PC has for no apparent reason developed a problem... When booting up
she goes throught POST but hangs at "Varifying DMI Pool Data"
In the PCI Devices List the last listing is "ACPI Controler" at IRQ 9

What is happening?? I can't get into Windows at all.

ANY help would be most welcome

Thanks

Enter the BIOS setup screen (hit "del" usually, as the computer is starting)
and load defaults. -Dave

Thanks for the quick respose Dave
Tried that but it did not solve the problem.... defaulted to Floppy as first
drive anf HD0 as second... system just (self) repeated booting at the DMI
part and still with ACPI as the one it is hanging on.

I changed HD1 as first and HD0 as secong but now I have the same problem...
it just hangs at that point.

Ststem is on a Gigabyte dual bios board, my problem is that the HD's have
iportant things on them and I don't want to loose the work! Is this a
Window's thing or a BIOS thing??

If BIOS I would be happy to change the board and get back to work.

You could try taking the HD's out and connecting them as slaves in a
different PC. At this would reassure yourself that your data is secure.

Do you have a 'spare' HD that you could connect as the primary HD for
testing the suspect board? You'll either get the system to boot or
you'll see the same problem again.

If the system boots then it could be a possible IRQ or DMA conflict, if
it doesn't boot at all then go back and double check all the jumpers,
settings, reseat any cards and try again.

Does the boad boot ok without any HD's attached? You could try booting
off of a bootable CD for example?

OH!!! You just reminded me of something. To the OP . . . go into BIOS
setup, I believe the screen you're looking for is "integrated peripherals".
But anyway, find an entry that reads something like "plug and play OS
installed?" (yes/no) Try toggling that to whatever it is NOT set at
currently. If it doesn't work, you can always put it back the way it is.
From memory, there should also be a setting somewhere near there to
automatically reset IRQ settings at boot. Again, try toggling that on or
off, depending on where it is now. If it doesn't work, put it back the way
you found it. Good luck, -Dave

I'd try disabling ACPI in the bios. Then see what happens.

Hi,
I have a feeling that this might be associated with a problem which has
cropped up in threads in others newsgroups over the past week or so.
I've had this myself - the system just starts failing to boot of hard
drive, but boots off floppy fine.
My first instinct, after swapping-out the IDE cables, was to suspect the
mainboard.
This is NOT a mainboard problem.
Swapping a hard drive with one from another machine showed that the
problem is with the drive.
It appears that the hard drive failed to boot up due to a problem with the
MBR (Master Boot Record).
Restoring ths wasn't too easy, as the fdisk /mbr DOS command just gave an
error.
In the end I had to manipulate the original boot partition away from the
start of the drive, use fdisk to give me a new DOS boot partition, and then
install MS-DOS 6.22 into that.
This got the MBR sensible again.
After that, it was just a case of bringing the original boot partition
back to its original position.
What concerns me is that a number of people on various newsgroups have all
encountered a similar problem at about the same time.
I wonder, could this be some sort of new virus - one which stuffs the MBR
?
Probably the best defence is to enable AV protection in the BIOS as this
prevents boot record changes.
Hope the above helps. If not, then maybe its time to go to backup.
Kevin.
