I have lost all exw fules for everything on my C drive, I tried repairing
windows but it cannot find the files to open with?? I don;t know what to do,
Can anyone help? Must I lose all? and do a complete re-install?

It sounds as if you removed a virus, or other type of malware. They often hijack the EXE and other executable extensions to ensure they get run as often as possible.

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Fixes, File Association Fixes, EXE File Association Fix and LNK File Association Fix.

NOTE: If your EXE file associations are corrupted, it can be difficult to open REGEDIT, or to even import REG files. To work around this, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.EXE and press Enter.

I did what you said, typed in rededit at prompt registry came up but don't
know what to do. I then went to your site, and followed your links, I
downloaded xp_exe_fix.reg. I can't open it as windows says it cannot find
the file

Today, with great enthusiasm and quite emphaticly,

readership

If you do manage to get back to normal without a nuke and
reinstall, I'd suggest that you buy a good imager. After long
investigation, especially with the help of many people here, I
bought Acronis True Image 9.0 for, I think, $59. Haven't needed to
use it, hope I never do. Like a Fire Department, they earn their
pay if they never go on a call!

Doug,

Ifigured it out, I did it, I'm so proud of me, never thought I'd figure out
how to do it. I can't thank you enough for literally saving me. Your
website is AWESOME! I big thanks, kisses hugs to you. You're a life saver
