Hi,

After been advised by MS to do a dcpromo and use ntdsutl to seize control of
the fsmo my Gobal Catalog will not come online.

While running dcdiag it reports that the old Server still shows up - however
ntdsutil shows no server. In AD users & computers under Domain Controllers
it still shows an entry for the old server.

None of my users can logon - pls HELP ASAP

Thanks!

Make one or more of your other DCs to be GCs. Reboot them after about
10-15minutes of making the changes.

Having said that, I find it hard to believe the a missing GC is what is
causing your current logon problem. We'll be able to tell after you've added
more GCs.

If you are refering to turning on Global Cataloging in AD Sites and
Services - I have - I rebooted too, I did notice that the DNS server does
NOT have any GC records, when I add them in manual and reboot - the DNS
Server Removes them

.
first, you must make sure that the old server is not
online, power it down and unplug from network. second,
after you did dcpromo, did you make the server a GC, you
have to do this in the site and services admin tools,
expand the sute , then the server, right click NTDS
setting and check the checkbox " Global catalog". this
will take about 30 minutes to do but the system will
become a GC. reboot after and check DNS to make it is
registered correctly, do dcdaig again, after 30 minutes.
third, you can use ADSi or NTDSUtil to delete the old
server object. In NTDSUtil, it is metadata cleanup. REBUID
THE OLD SERVER, MAKE SURE IT NEVER COMES BACK ONLINE!!
good luck
