We have a small LAN using 2 NT4 servers. All the clients were Windows 95,
Windows 98 and Windows ME and connecting to the domain correctly. Recently,
we bought a few notebook computers using Windows XP Pro. I tried to logon
the server without success. Can someone tell me if the servers need to be
configured something extra in order to allow Windows xp Pro to connect or
specific configuration on client side need to be done.

Thanks,

Ray

Ray,

If you are running a Windows NT 4.0 Domain then you need to join the Windows
XP Professional machines to the domain to allow them to use accounts from
the domain to logon with.

do you have the proper network protocols installed on the laptops?
can you see anything on the network?

Stephan,

Yes, tcp/ip. The notebook computer gets ip, gateway and subnet mask from
DHCP server and can connect to internet. The only thing I cannot logon to
the NT4 server and access the files on the server.
Any idea?

Thanks,

Ray

Mike,

Many thanks for your advice. Following the instructions from help file, I
got two boxes as below:-

--------------------------------
Computer Name Changes

User Name
Password

-----------------------------------
Log On to Windows

User Name
Password
Log on to

------------------------------------------

I typed the registered user name on nt server and its password into two
boxes but received error message saying that the user name and password are
invalid. I use a Windows ME computer and use the same user name and
password. The logon was successful. Are the user names and passwords
different? Your further advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ray

Ray,

From the instructions in the Help File

To join a domain

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators
group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to
a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this
procedure.

1.. Open System in Control Panel.
2.. On the Computer Name tab, click Change.
3.. Under Member of, click Domain, type the name of the domain you want to
join, and then click OK.
You will be prompted to provide a user name and user password to join the
computer to the domain.

*** The User name and password you enter here is the Domain administrators
user name and its password.

4.. Click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.
You will be prompted to restart your computer to apply your changes.

Restart your PC.

Now you get a dialog box to logon to the domain.

So you put in a User name and Password for an account that exists in the
Domain.

The Logon To box - will have the local PCs name and also the Domains name.
You should select the Domains name. (By pressing the little drop down arrow)
