hi guys,
i have a problem, recently i re-install my WinXP pro, because it likes
to crash and one day when i boot it, it tells me to reinstall.
for the sake of my old files, i installed it to a different folder
(C:\windows.000), after the install is a wrap.
i do "Take ownership" for my old files, because it wont open
unless i do so. but there's still a problem, theres a couple
of folders that has a green coloured text for the names
and the file names are also coloured in green.
these folders and files cant be open Even after i change
the owner from the "old me" to the "new me".
can somebody please help??
because i really need those folders and files.

thx

Green colored files indicate they are encrypted files.
Do you recall encrypting some files and did you make
a backup of the Encryption Certificate Key?

Without a backup of the original Encryption Certificate Key, encrypted files
are unrecoverable as they will stay encrypted forever. There is no recovery
method since the encryption algorithm is now completely different with a
reinstall of Windows XP.

Hi

A green colour indicates encrypted files.

If you did export the private encryption key before you reinstalled
the OS, import it back in the new OS installation to be able to
decrypt the files.

If you did not make a backup of the private encryption key:

If you have access to the user profile folders on the old install for
the user that encrypted the files and if you remember the password for
the user that encrypted the data, you might be able to save the files.
Take a look at this site for more details:

Thanks for the Quick reply guys,
but i dont recall making a certificate Key, can i do somthing without it?
i havent read the KB links you give me (sorry :)

thanks guys.

All you can do is wish you had made a backup
of the encryption key certificate before reinstalling
Windows XP, because without it, the encrypted files
will always remain encrypted. That's the reason behind
file encryption....to prevent unauthorized access.
