I installed a 2nd disk drive, and because of the drive bay and the way the
holes line up, I could only install it upside down. It is a Maxtor 80gb.
The silver top is down, and the black side with the circuitry is up.

Will this cause any errors or shorten the life of the disk?

No.

=====================

It's very difficult to read upside down data on the screen.

Why not ask the manufacturer whether any problems will occur?
If anybody knowa, it's them.

i've used harddrives both upside down and vertically mounted
without the slightest problem

Could be worse - it could be upside down and backwards.

That's pretty bad, but NEVER tilt the HD 90 degrees, or all the
text will be facing you edgewise - it's a right bastard to read then.

As the rest said.Luckily hard drives don't care :D

Probably not. However I had one of those infamous IBM deskstar drives which
failed, potentially losing a lot of data. During the data recovery process
and the extreme malhandling of the drive during this process I found that it
would run more reliably when inverted. Once I had recovered the data the
drive was taken out of use. So long term operation upside down was not
tested. If you tinker inside your case a lot there may be an increased
probability of foreign objects dropping on to the electronics.

The only problematic position, in my opininion, would be
inside-out....

For me it's the oposite situation. My old Maxtor won't run unless i place it
upside down. Pretty weird thing?
