I'm having problems with the reliability of my home a/c power. What's the
best value in a low-end UPS or perhaps a home built unit? Any pointers
appreciated.....

Consider an APC Smart UPS, 700 VA or more. They have
true sine wave output.

Then you need a 400 UPS at least... Thay are cheep now no mre then $75...
