Virus Alert!

This virus is deadly! I have gone through hoops trying to remove this off 2
clients computers. Do not open any attachment coming from UPS or any other
email you do not know. Even if you do know that the person could be sending
it- DO NOT OPEN IT- email the person back and ask them if they actually sent
you an attachment
Please read all what I have written

UPS Virus Warning

UPS has issued a warning about a new computer virus circulating as an
attachment to emails purporting to originate from the "UPS Packet Service."
The warning is authentic. The virus is real.

The bogus Packet Service messages claim a parcel sent by the user was
undeliverable due to an incorrect address. The user is instructed to open an
attachment containing a copy of the invoice. The attachment actually
contains a virus which may infect the user's computer.

As a general rule, Internet users should always be wary of opening unknown
file attachments, and maintain up-to-date antivirus protection on their
computers at all times.

Text of the UPS alert on UPS Official Website: Attention Virus Warning

We have become aware there is a fraudulent email being sent that says it is
coming from UPS and leads the reader to believe that a UPS shipment could
not be delivered. The reader is advised to open an attachment reportedly
containing a waybill for the shipment to be picked up.

This e-mail attachment contains a virus. We recommend that you do not open
the attachment, but delete the email immediately.

UPS may send official notification messages on occasion, but they rarely
include attachments. If you receive a notification message that includes an
attachment and are in doubt about its authenticity, please contact
(e-mail address removed).

Please note that UPS takes its customer relationships very seriously, but
cannot take responsibility for the unauthorized actions of third parties.

Thank you for your attention.

I've seen this one myself--so it is likely widespread.
(I haven't seen an infection--just the messages.)

I haven't been hit with it _yet_
Alerted all my customers with UPS accounts.

This is 2008 - some 10 years after it became common knowledge not to
open unknown email attachments. Why are people *still* opening unknown,
executable email attachments???

Common knowledge to everyone reading this forum regularly perhaps, but not
so common to the neub who got his E-machine just last week, and hasn't had
the time to read any security warnings yet. Fortunately, or
not-so-fortunately depending on your POV, there are thousands achieving
this un-enviable position every day.

or
since we all lead such fast lives, a lot of folks do not think first before
opening things- then cry once it is done

I suspect each of us has his/her weak spot:

Many years ago, for me, it was an attachment included with a message which
came from the address of my son's soccer coach. He often sent
attachments---rule lists, directions to fields, etc. This time, it was a
virus that infected notepad.exe--you can look that one up--it'll date me!

I was instantly aware that I'd goofed, and no harm was done--but what I'm
trying to get across is that each computer user probably has some blind spot
that may result in their opening an attachment--in a moment of overwork, or
sub-par energy..,.

For example--the folks I work with are entirely aware of attachment issues,
and spam--but at least three different people, including some high-up
managers--asked me about the IRS spam/virus mail when it was first
spread--wishful thinking!
(i.e. they wanted to know if this was real or not, as opposed to knowing it
wasn't worth even mentioning most of that stuff to me...)
