That's a good point...I didn't even think about my UPS when I
installed Vista.

<sigh> Now I gotta go search some more on Vista issues...

:-)

Alexander:
I have an APC RS1500 connected on one Vista RC1 tower. There is
a battery icon in the tray and under "device manager" it's listed under
batteries, HID UPS Battery. When I last checked APC doesn't have software
compatible with Vista.

Hmm, i take it your UPS has USB management interface. Since it's
plug-and-play, probably that's why you have your UPS/Battery detected.
Unfortunately, I have APC Back-UPS 650 with COM port which is not PnP.

Hey what do you know, I have it shown in device manager too, but I
don't have a battery icon in the system tray.

I have APS UPS 500 and the software on their web site install on 64 and 32 bit vista.

My belkin shows up as a hid ups battery also. I even got the monitor
software to work by installing in compatibility mode and then going into
it's program directory and changing all the service/monitor exe files to
xpsp2 compatability. However, i can't understand why vista has no ups
section in power options instead of treating a ups like a laptop battery.

I bought a cheapo backup bettery that uses the USB port and plugged it in,
and lord and behold it worked! I don't think I installed any software.

After I found out it detected my UPS, I played with the advanced
settings under the power settings in the display options, and I found
they actually work. Well..sort of.

By setting the monitor to power down after 3 minutes on battery, I was
able to test it by simply unplugging the UPS and watching what
happens. As expected, the monitor powered down after 3 minutes (YAY!).
I had the computer set to shutdown after 5 minutes, but after 5
minutes, it didn't (BOO!).

It also didn't "wake up" after restoring AC power - the monitor stayed
off and tapping keys, moving the mouse, even power cycling the monitor
didn't help. It was "stuck" in the off position, yet the computer was
still on and Windows was presumably still running.

OK...so how the heck do you shutdown safely?

A hard reset was the only option.

Everything restarted ok. I found it odd that Vista didn't even
complain that it lost power. I expected it to ask me how to start, but
nope...it just rambled on aimlessly (like my rants) and started up
again like nothing had happened, even though the logs say otherwise.

<scratching my head>

Vista beta is even more weird than XP beta. I guess it kinda makes
sense...everything else in Vista is incoherent, so why not the power
settings and hard resets.

Heh.

:-)

You are correct, I could not find anything about UPS (except
for the definition).

However, I found this with a search of Microsoft.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...isdk/wmi/win32_uninterruptiblepowersupply.asp

"The Win32_UninterruptiblePowerSupply WMI class represents
the capabilities and management capacity of an uninterruptible
power supply (UPS). Beginning with Windows Vista, this class is
obsolete and not available because the Uninterrupted Power Supply
(UPS) service is no longer available. This service worked with serially
attached UPS devices, not USB devices."

My old UPS has a connection to the serial port of my computer,
but the new one I got today (APC Back-UPS ES 650) has a
USB connection. I have not tried installing the APC software on Vista.
