UPS question

Hi, sorry if this is a bad group, I can't find anything better.

I have a Belkin 550VA that has only my computer plugged into it. It's
rated for ~300W.

I have a TWA-500W PSU that gives feedback about its power usage: it's
at ~140W.

Anyway, if I plug my iron (or other devices) into the UPS, the whole
thing crashes.

Is this normal? Shouldn't the UPS stop this sort of short-circuit (if
that's what it is)?

You over-loaded it and it shut down...

that's preferable to burning up I'd say!
