Is it possible to upgrade an Windows XP Pro box to Vista Home Premium? (using
an upgrade disc, not full install)

I ask becuase Dell is telling me that you cannot upgrade from XP Pro to
Vista Home Premium.

Thanks!

No that's considered a downgrade which can't be done via upgrading.
Upgrades have to be at or above an equivalent product SKU.

Isn't going from any version of XP to any version of Vista considered a
DOWNGRADE?

I think it is, and I'm not alone

You are eligible to buy an Upgrade Edition, but you will have to 'clean
install', as you would be going from a Pro version to a Home one.

So... is this an endorsement of the "clean install from upgrade DVD"
scenario? (boot from DVD, don't put in product number, get a 'clean'
install, boot into Vista, run upgrade from within Vista....) I haven't heard
good or ill on this since BL first posted it in his newsletter.

Lang, no, this is not the same as the double install with an upgrade disk
scenario. In the OP's case upgrade will be greyed out and the Vista install
will only allow him to clean install. A Pro version of XP cannot be
physically upgraded to a Home version of Vista as it would result in a loss
of functionality.
