Joe

It is the easiest of all Windows upgrades, but you will still need to ensure
that all important stuff is backed up (saved) to a safe place..

You will, of course, have to buy either the 'upgrade' or 'full' retail
version.. OEM XP will not upgrade.. it will only clean install..

I've just recently learned that there's an upgrade
available to upgrade XP home to XP Pro. I'm
just moving into the realm of web development,
and the use of modern web development tools
..ASP and IIS SQL database management
facilities are required for use with windows 2003
systems.

Are there any cautions you'd advise? I don't
want to lose my settings, classic explorer views,
favorites, and SP upgrades for MS apps?

And I certainly don't want to reformat my C
drive.

Your guidance would be appreciated.

You will need to purchase the Retail Upgrade version of XP Pro. It
will upgrade your existing XP Home to Pro even though it does not say
that specifically on the package.

This is perhaps the simplest upgrade ever, at least from a technical
point of view, because all that is being done is to add some
additional functionality to what is already installed. But Murphy's
Law reigns supreme, especially the corrollary that says that the one
time you do not prepare for problems then that is when the problems
will occur.

So backup your critical stuff, such as by saving a disk image to
another drive. Another option would be to use the Files And Stettings
Transfer Wizard to save your data and settings to another drive or to
a removable backup device such as CDRW,

Here is a checklist website with advice on preparing for an upgrade to
Windows XP:

No, there is no special upgrade version just for this, but the regular XP
Professional Upgrade works fine (although it doesn't say so on the box).

Although it's the easiest and most-likely successful of all possible
upgrades, there are no guarantees that it always works perfectly. However
unlikely, it's always possible that something might go wrong. For that
reason it's prudent to be sure you have a backup of anything you can't
afford to lose before beginning.

Thanks for the great input. I just checked
and the retail price of the XP Pro upgrade
is $199. Ouch! I don't think XP Pro gives
me enough benefits (I am a home user
who mainly spends time developing webs,
scanning the Net, and hanging out in
forums.) to justify the expense. I'd like
to have the additional features of Pro
but not at $200.

If you want to use IIS you'll need Pro Joe.
