upgrading XP home to XP pro

H

Harry

Hi,

I am about to upgrad my Toshiba laptop from its original Home XP edition to
Pro edition.

Several things I heard. Some said that I have to redo everything. Some
said that I can keep all installed application as long as uninstall the
anti-virus software first. And the upgrad should be straightforward...

What's your opinion?

Thanks
BTW, I am planing to use the laptop to connect to company's network and just
realized that my home edition is not designed to do that. That's the main
reason of upgrading.

Hi,

Step 1: Contact Toshiba and see if any needed drivers are available for
download. Laptops commonly used specialized drivers that are not available
in the retail versions of Windows (and version). Often, the manufacturers
can offer a customized upgrade disk, so ask as this is the best possible
route. If the drivers are not available, then some functionality in the
system may be reduced. If you decide to proceed, then you should be aware of
this.

Step 2: Disable everything from loading at boot in the existing
installation, in particular the antivirus software. Also check the system
BIOS for any antivirus detection scheme, if it is enabled you need to
disable it or it will prevent setup from writing to the boot sector.

Step 3: Backup anything you do not want to lose to removable media. If
anything goes wrong, then at least you won't lose what you have.

Step 4: Boot the Home installation, insert the Pro CD and follow the upgrade
prompts.
