Hi,

I am thinking of upgrading my Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP
Professional because I need to install Visual Studio.net, SQL Server 2000 and
running IIS service.

My question is how do i install Windows XP Professional successfully. Do I
need to uninstall Home Edition or just have to run XP Professional
installation to
overwrite Home Edition?

Is there any microsoft site that shows step by step installation from Home
Edition to Professional?

Please kindly guide me... and thanks a lot.

Regards,
Sb

Although there is little chance of losing data with this upgrade make sure
your important data is backed up.
This is a very safe and straight forward upgrade. You can use the XP Pro
upgrade version to upgrade from Home even though it is not listed on the
box.

An upgrade to Windows XP Pro is a smooth transition will not affect your
current programs or files if you use the following procedure:

1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" [boxed] of Windows XP Professional.
2. Uninstall your antivirus program.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD, DVD, or other backup media.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select
the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.

Not sure where carrie fish gets her info at but,at microsoft.com,they only
recommend a clean install of pro from home.Hence thier is no upgrade, upgrade
is for older windows OS.

Hi,

Thank you to all of you for replying my question.

I haven't done the installation yet because I still haven't bought the
upgrade as suggested by Carey Frisch.

However, I am a bit confused here as Andrew mentioned that I have to do a
clean installation and not upgrade because it is for older Windows OS. What
is clean installation and how to do it?

So right now, which instruction do I need to follow? Is it upgrade or clean
installation?

Please kindly advise..

Thanks once again for your help .

Sb

Andrew does not know what he is talking about. The Pro upgrade will upgrade
Home to Pro and is an approved upgrade path. See the link listed below.
Notice it says for an "Inplace Upgrade" and lists Home and then has a Yes
under Pro.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/matrix.mspx

Now Andrew show us where you get your information.

Hi all,

Thank you very much for your help and explanation.

I just noticed that there are two versions of Windows XP Professional while
surfing this site http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/evaluation/compare.mspx

The first one is Windows XP Professional and the other one si Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition. Appreciate if you could kindly advise which one
should I select if I want to install MS SQL Server 2000, Ms. Studio.NET & IIS
services in the system.

Thank you very much.

64 bit requires special hardware, since you have Home now you do not have a
64 bit system. There is no Home version for 64.
Download the non-64 version.

BTW beware of any advice Andrew posts, most of the time it is wrong and will
cause loss of data.

I am trying to do the same thing and would like to know if sb received the
answers and what they were and were they successful? How do I do this?

My suggestion is to do a clean install, first back up all personal files and
anything you want kept to usb memory stick and something liek cd.

Tehn complete delete teh partition and reinstall although if oyu want iss
etc your better with server 2003 to be honest dnt touch server 2008 its
still miles to buggy jsut liek vista, home server aint to bad but i aint
100% sure it do everything you want esipcally not sql, although what you are
talking about would be better done by linux
