hello guys, before I have my church get windows xp pro. is it possible
to upgrade windows xp home to pro and keep there files in tact?

The short answer is yes, this is a supported upgrade.

What you need to be aware of is that any major process like an operating system upgrade/installation can have glitches. You need to make sure that you have a current backup of all your important files.

All of the other answers are correct but I need to be the "devil's" advocate
(pun intended). If there is a valid reason for upgrading Home to Pro, great
and you don't have to read further.

The benefits of Pro are the ability to join a domain type network, ability
to run IIS, and greater file security but not much else. They both run on
the same OS kernel and one is as stable as the other. This Microsoft site
compares the two editions.
