I have an NT4 domain comprising 1 x NT4 PDC, 1 x NT4 BDC
and 5 x W2K servers.

The PDC and BDC are old DEC Alpha servers that are not
suitable for upgrading. However, I do want to upgrade my
domain to W2K but without the option of upgrading my PDC
I 'm not sure of the best way to do this.

Any suggestions?

Or you can remove Win 2k from one of the Win 2k servers and install NT 4.0
on it as a BDC while connected to your existing network, promote it to PDC
then upgrade it to Win 2k and AD.
This article show how to upgrade the PDC (which ever DC you choose to be
PDC) to Win 2k.

I'd already thought of that - I was looking for an easier
way but thanks anyway.

There is no easier way. An upgrade MUST be done on the PDC in order to bring
the ONLY writeable copy of the SAM into the Win 2k domain. Upgrading any
other server will result in a different SAM. Different SAM = different
domain.
