I am holding out on a new motherboard, HD memory etc system I have here
until Vista is released. I would like to do a clean install, but since I
have a number of old Windows 2000 CD's CD's around can I do a fresh install
from the upgrade version of Vista and simply transiently insert an old
Win2000 CD in when asked for. Ie. can I avoid first having to install the
Win 2000 completely on the system.

Also can I go from Win2000 to Vista Business edition upgrade.
 
The Windows Vista upgrade requires that Windows be running when you start
the upgrade. It also does not support Windows 2000 as the host operating
system so you can't upgrade from 2000 to Vista anyway.

The process is still not clear for W2K or X64 but they DO qualify one for
upgrade pricing.
 
If you do not plan on installing either Windows XP
or Windows 2000, then you'll need to purchase a
"Full Version" of Windows Vista.

You won't be asked for a cd. Vista upgrade editions do not work like XP and
Win2k. You have to start an upgrade edition setup from the legacy Windows
desktop. You would have to have Win2k running to do that. Yes, you can
migrate from Win2k to Vista Business x86 by purchasing a VB upgrade edition,
however I suggest that you consider buying a full edition of Vista.

Hey Richard, how's it going?

I'm not sure the upgrade path from 2000 to Vista is clear yet, at least not
for me. If you can't start the upgrade from within 2000, yet you must start
the upgrade from within a running copy of Windows, then how is the following
statement from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeinfo.mspx to be
supported:

"If you are currently using Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP
Professional x64, you are eligible for an upgrade copy to a corresponding or
better edition of Windows Vista, but a clean install is required."
 
Apparently by doing a custom install. I am still trying to find a way to
get the lowdown on how that works out of MS. The big question in my mind is
does that mean I can select an alternate volume to install to using an
ugrade edition product key? That has all kinds of implications.
