My computer currently runs on windows me and I want to
upgrade it to xp. Can I just reload over me? I do not
want to have to reformat the c drive as I have not done
this before.

Yes, you can install it over ME. However, prior to installation, you should
check for compatibility and other issues. If you already have an XP CD, at
the ME desktop, place it in the drive. When the menu appears, select "Check
System Compatibility." If you do not as yet have the CD, the upgrade
advisor can be downloaded from the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp

Note, if you have access to a broadband connection you might want to use it
for the download as this is approximately 50MB.

Do not assume anything to which the advisor points is too small an issue to
worry about. Virtually anything it finds might be a source of trouble and
cause setup to halt.

Also, be sure you are well backed up. An operating system upgrade or clean
install is a major task for a computer even if it appears as easy as most
normal software installations. This is a major system overhaul and anything
can go wrong so best advice, be prepared and be sure you are backed up.

You can do it either way, if you have either a Full version of XP
or an Upgrade version.

But be careful. If you have an OEM version (which many people
confuse with the full version), you can only do a clean
installation, and not an upgrade over the top of Me.

Also be aware that there are no guarantees of success when you do
an uograde. However unlikely, it's always possible that something
might go wrong. For that reason it's prudent to be sure you have
a backup of anything you can't afford to lose before beginning.

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for and sold with
Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent hardware
quality requirements. This is particularly true of many models in
Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class
Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is
quite sensitive to borderline defective hardware (particularly
motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.
