I have a Pentium II 233MHz laptop(Quantex)with 512 RAM.
It came with Windows 98 and I upgraded to ME. I just
attempted to upgrade to XP Pro and the setup program stops
consistently with 34 minutes to go while in
the "installing devices" portion of the installation. I
reformatted the drive, installed 98 from scratch from the
OEM disk that came with the computer and then tried to
install again with the same results. Any ideas?

Disconnect any peripheral hardware devices from your computer,
except for your mouse, keyboard and monitor.

If you can access the BIOS look for a setting that says Plug n Play Aware OS
and select "Disable".
If that doesn't work then "Reenable" and pull your NIC. Install and then add
the NIC back.

After you reinstall Windows 98 and before you've installed XP, place the XP
CD in the drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System
Compatibility." This might give some idea if anything in your current setup
is causing a problem.

Have you check and see if your laptop components are compatible with XP. You may be limited to WinME for that laptop. Also I think you are going to have a lot of problems finding drivers for the hardware in it, to allow it to work with XP. Maybe check the laptop's manufacture's website, first.

It also seems that your CPU is at the minimum or just below it. XP requires at a 300mhz (233 if it is overclocked). I think for XP, it really should be run on a Laptop/PC no less than 500mhz w/256mb of RAM, anything less and I think it would run very sluggish.
