I purchased windows xp pro oem from tiger direct. My
thoughts were I dont care if I get a manual or a box,but
it didn't dawn on me until I was ready to upgrade ( from
win 98 that I didn't have an upgrade edition.
Is there a way to use Oem without removing all of my
files and starting fresh ????

Thanx jim

OEM versions of Windows XP cannot upgrade over an
existing Windows installation....only a "retail version"
has the upgrade capability.

If you have a clean partition to install into it will
install, so move all your data.

BTW, Tiger Direct charges about $50 too much for OEM.

No. That's one of the problems with the OEM version. which has
the following disadvantages:

1. Its license ties it permanently to the first computer it's
installed on. It can never legally be moved to another computer,
sold, or given away.

2. It can only do a clean installation, not an upgrade.

3. Microsoft provides no support for OEM versions. You have to
get any needed support from your OEM, and that may range anywhere
between good and non-existent.

Nope. An OEM CD cannot be used to perform an upgrade of an
earlier OS, as it was designed to be installed _only_ upon an empty
hard drive. It can still be used to perform a repair installation
(a.k.a. an in-place upgrade) of an existing WinXP installation.

Not according to what I read on their web page. Home edition
is $50 less than Pro edition. Otherwise they run about the same
as newegg, mwave, or intolan.
