Is there a collective view on the minimum hardware configuration for
successful upgrade to Win XP? And is there any varation in requirements from
XP Home to XP Pro?

I am thinking about upgrading a PIII-650 with:
- 1 x Maxtor 91531U3 (14.5 GB) Hard Disk
- 1 x Seagate 310212A (9.5 GB) Hard Disk
- 256 MB PC-133 RAM
- nVidia TNT Pro2 32MB video card
- Samsung SD-508 DVD reader
- Lite-On 52x CD-RW
- HCF 56K PCI Modem
- PCI Firewire Card
- Realtek RTL8139(A) Ethernet Card
- Yamaha PCI Wavetable Audio Card

Originally I considered the machine too old to upgrade, but a friend has
been running XP successfully on his PIII notebook, so I am forced to
reconsider. Main motivation is access to Win XP movie maker software.

Your hardware configuration is okay for XP but if you want to use movie
maker, then it is very limited.

Your processor may be too slow to process any movies.

You do not have enough RAM to help with the processing of any movies. And
the memory is slow!

Your hard drives are too small to consider the processing of movies.

You video card is showing its age. It is too old!

Given all the above mentioned info, beware: if you upgrade the motherboard
after you have installed XP, you will need to do a "repair" install and call
Microsoft for a new activation.
