Although it apparently is impossible to upgrade directly from Windows XP
to Windows 7, is it not possible to upgrade from Windows XP to Vista,
and then upgrade again to 7? Thanks!

Yes.

So, I'd have to buy an upgrade to Vista first. That's not a good
"plan" in my opinion. Guess I'll be sticking with XP until it's new
computer time.

You went from question A to conclusion K on question asked by someone that
was not you, skipping a few letters in-between, methinks. ;-)

All that was asked/answered was a basic 'can it be done' question, and the
answer is 'yes, it can be done'.

It is possible. But costly! Also, it is not recommended. A Clean
Install (although time-consuming) is much better (with regard to
stability, conflicts, and performance) -- even if it were possible to
perform a direct in-place upgrade from XP to 7.

Yes, it's possible. Not necessarily a good choice, but possible.
