Upgrading to Pro from Home on an OEM install

I have an HP pc with an OEM install of XP Home with the recovery system installed on a separate partition of my C: drive. I want to install Pro for better networking and remote access. HP technical support said I should have no problem but that I'd lose all the recovery functions. I'm assuming that they mean the HP-specific recovery functions built into the recovery partition, driver restore, a number of features and the start up recovery console on the start up screen. I'm wondering if anyone out there has done an upgrade on an OEM distribution like this and can comment as to whether I'm really losing anything that would negate the benefits of going to Pro? I have 4 computers, 2 with XP HE and 2 with 98, wirelessly networked. I'd like to have the primary machine have Pro. Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Yes, they mean the HP-specific stuff. Chances are great that if XP Home is
supported, then so is Pro. I've done a number of them without problem (in
fact only one did have a problem, but it was due to faulty hardware). The
problem you may run into is HP drivers not available in the retail version,
though usually you can find these available as a download. They may not have
mentioned this, but doing this may also void an warranty you have left.
Also, WinXP Pro can be booted on CD to load its own Recovery Console for
troubleshooting.

Thanks, that's what I thought. The support fellow in India somewhere did tell me about a potential driver issue for audio and video but gave me the links. He did say it was his opinion I'd really like the added features of Pro. By the way, I always like your simple, direct and easily understandable answers to all us posters. I try to read your stuff 'cause I always learn a lot.

You're welcome TJ.
