Upgrading Software Question

Last night I upgraded my Winamp Player to it's newest version and
noticed in my down load file that there are two other (older) versions
in there. I had ass-u-me(d) that when you up grade that the previous
version was covered over with this new upgrade. Maybe it is, so my
question is what will happen if I delete these older versions? Or should
I just hit send to recycle bin just to get rid of the extra links, and
not try to delete any older versions.

Check the Start menu for previous versions of your application. If they are
there, and an uninstall item is available, use it to remove older versions
of your software. Check in Add/Remove Programs for older versions of your
software. If no uninstall item is present from the Start menu, use
Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the older versions of the software. If you
are looking in a folder created for the purpose of holding downloaded
applications from the internet and you see the older versions of your
currently installed application, you can simply delete them from that
folder. Once you click on the downloaded file and it has installed the
relevant application, usually to the Program Files directory, that download
file can be deleted, unless you wish to archive it for reinstallation at a
later date.

Are you saying that if an uninstall is provided, it should be used before
upgrading?
Doesn't this mean that you then have to remember AND reset all your
preferences, which is no small task with some apps?

It depends on the program. Setup may be designed to install over the old
program - updating/upgrading in the process or even offering to uninstall
the old version. Others need to be uninstalled before the new version is
installed. Usually there are directions at the download site that specify
which method to use.

As far as preferences go, check the programs help files before uninstalling
it. Sometimes there is a way to export preferences so that they can be
imported to a new installation.

No. Apply the upgrade. After the upgrade has been made and any reboots
have been applied, you can then check for earlier versions of your
application installation file(s). If you do not wish to save these for
archive and possible installation at a later date, you can delete them.

For instance, you have a folder for holding downloaded programs. It
contains three files, Photo Fun version 1.0, Photo Fun version 2.0, and your
newly downloaded upgrade, Photo Fun version 3.0. Click on version 3.0 to
install it. After the installation, delete version 1.0 and 2.0 in your
download folder, if you so desire. Keep version 3.0 and save it to a CD or
floppy disk for archiving. Once an application is installed you can delete
the installation files if you wish.
