Go to www.crucial.com and take the RAM test. It will tell you what RAM
your computer needs.

thanks 4 ya replies, i cant actually use the crucial wizard becuase i
dont know my model number, but i have found out now that i have 2x
256mb DDR SD-RAM and 3rd slot free, so am i right in assuming all i
need to do is buy ram of type DDR SD-RAM??

cheers :)

No, you're not. You need to know what kind of DDR SD-RAM to buy,
although 512MB RAM should be more than enough unless you do heavy-duty
video editing.

so what exactly do you mean by what kind? how many different type of
that type are there!! :)

Look again. You don't need to know anything about your PC. Crucial installs
a small ActiveX program that scans your PC and tells you what sort of
(Crucial) RAM you need.

http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/

My own preference, though, would be to download the free Everest Home
edition (www.lavalys.com). That may give you more information, like what
sort of mainboard is in the machine, which would allow you to check the
details on what you need.

The are all sorts of DDR SDRAM available. There's PC2100, PC2700, and PC3200
for starters. (PC3200 may be compatible with the lower frequency stuff, but
it's not guaranteed.) Your system may be limited in the maximum size DIMM
you can install.

You may get away with just walking into a shop and getting some PC3200 DDR,
but it's be best to spend a little time and find what you need. There's
still a chance that you'll have trouble: some mainboards become fussier if
every memory slot is populated, for example.

Whatever you install, I recommend checking it afterwards with memtest86+
(http://www.memtest.org/).

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

Many types. You need an "exact" match for what you now have. Or, you go by
the Crucial "RAM configurator" and buy the quantity of new RAM sticks that
you know will match each other (1-512 meg, 2-256 meg, 2-512 meg etc). Then
you retire the old RAM because you don't know exactly what it is anyway and
may cause a conflict with the new.

Can I use 2-256's and 1-512 on emachine amd athelon 64 processor to get the
1gb. Or should I go with 4-256? I have two computers and am trying to
upgrade both to 1gb.

That would depend entirely on whether the motherboard supports that
configuration. It hasn't anything to do with Windows XP. Please read the
motherboard manual or contact the vendors tech support for motherboard
specific issues.
