Well first of all, i hope i am posting under the right topic if not i apologize. Anyways, i am considering upgrading my computer. This is currently installed in my pc.

>Windows Home Edition XP
Motherboard >Gigabyte ga-7s748
AMD Athlon(tm)xp 3000+ 2.17ghz 1.25bg of ram
ATI Radeon pro agp 512m
Harddrive Barracuda 120g model number st3120022a
500 watt L&C Power supply

This machine is only used to play video games and was wanting to atleast upgrade the motherboard and amd processor. Also, is this upgrade possible with items that i can just swap out and have no issues with, lets say, like plug and play items. Any suggestions would be great and thanks for your help!!

You could, at a pinch, keep your case and power supply.

To make it worthwhile upgrading you'll have to replace:

Motherboard
CPU (retail with stock cooler)
Memory
Graphics card
Hard Disk

Which you could probably do for about £300.00-£400.00-ish.

What optical drives do you have?

If you're interested then post here again and we'll make some upgrade suggestions.
