Hello again

To upgrade my graphics I need to add a new graphics 'card'. I currently have
'Integrated Graphics' which I understand to be a chip on the motherboard?.
Do I have to remove this chip before fitting the new 'card' . Is the new
'card' a card or a chip ? Where do I plug it in ?

Help please (totally confused)

No, no, no! You don't have to remove any chips on the motherboard. You
will just have install the new video card, and disable the OnBoard
video in the BIOS then restart the computer and have Windows detect the
card and have it install the proper drivers.

You have to get a video card that will be compatible with your
motherboard, what make and model number of computer do you have? If the
computer is a generic no name machine then you will have to properly
identify the motherboard and read the motherboard specifications to see
what type of card it can accept. If your board is older you will
probably have to buy an AGP type video card, if the board is newer you
might have to get PCI Express card. Give us more information and
someone will be able to help further with your selection and
installation of card.

It's not difficult to do as long as you buy the right card, these things
only fit in one way in only one slot.

This is not really a Windows question, and is really off topic here.
However...

No. You didn't physically remove it, you just disable its functionality. You
do that in the BIOS setup program.

Is the new 'card' a card or a chip ?

It's a card, with many chips and other components on it.

Where do I plug it
in ?

In a free slot on your motherboard. The slot will be PCI, PCI Express, or
AGP, depending on your motherboard. Consult your system documentation to
find out which.

Although this isn't hard to do, since this is obviously something you've
never done before, rather than do it yourself you might want to ask a more
knowledgeable friend for help.

No, leave the chip alone.

The new video card contains the video chip.

In a slot compatible with your PC.

You need to do a whole lot more research on the subject other than the
questions you posed.

If AGP, research the types of AGP video cards in reference to 2X, 4X, and
8X. Which one can you use?

How do you access your bios setup to disable the onboard video?

Do you need to remove any software in relation to your current video in XP?

If an ATI video card, are you following directions for both removal of
current video driver software, selecting the default PCI video card for XP,
and installation of ATI driver software?

Do you know what order to do the above in relation to disabling of the
onboard video, followed by adding the new video card?

Can your current video monitor support any size resolution you select with
your new video card?

Can all your software including games, support any resolution size you
select?

Is there any hardware onboard that may conflict with the bios detected
hardware interrupt for the new video card?
