I use OE to view my hotmail email account. I want to change to O instead for
better functionality. I keep getting error messages saying that Mail server
cannot be found.

Assumign Outlook is actually isntalled and operating (which it should be)
Delete your account settings via Tools | Email Accounts (Outlook 2002 and
2003) and try adding it again manually. Consult your service provider for
details on your account settings.

You can't use Outlook for free HTTP Hotmail accts. You don't 'upgrade' to
Outlook, since Office's Outlook is a different program from Windows' OE and
Outlook needs OE to work.

Wrong.Wrong and Wrong Yes you can definably install HTTP(Hotmail) to your Outlook. A free Hotmail account will install depending when and since you have this account. A paid account will also install . Outlook will run and is not dependant on Outlook Express at all except for the newsreader if you use it at all.

Outlook *does* have dependencies on Outlook Express. They share some of the
same files. These dependencies are less with later versions of Outlook. The
recommendation, however, remains to keep Outlook Express installed to avoid
any issues regarding dependencies.

As far as Mary mentioning that you can't upgrade Outlook Express - well, you
*can*. The upgrade doesn't remove OE. "Upgrade", in this context, means that
when installing Outlook OE settings are imported and Outlook is set as the
default email client.

OE always will stay installed in any Windows environment since it is installed by default when installing the OS. Too do *not* need the use of OE to have OL work. OL can work without OE if the case need to be. I myself do not share the *.wab or anything with OE only have it fro a newsreader. I depend mainly on the Business contact manager for my addresses and as a matter of fact the *.wab of OE is completely empty and is of no use to me. This was not the case as you did say in earlier versions of OL but in 2003 there is no need to rely on OE at all.

After furious head scratching, Peter Foldes asked:
