Upgrading NT4 Server to Windows 2000 - From A Ghost Image of a Defunct HD

Michael

Ill try and explain this as best as possible, but id it
doesnt make a great deal of sense, please ask questions
as Im rather desperate to get this one sorted.

Just recently, the SCSI hd that my NT4 sp6 Server died.
Putting my old hard drive into another machine resukts in
the drive not being found
It also appears that the SCSI controller is also faulty
as when I introduce another SCSI HD on that controller,
its is also not detected.

And all this happened just as I was getting ready to
upgrade to windows 2000 server.

Thankfully (well I hope so) just 2 days before the crash,
I mad a ghost image of my server.
Just a straight disk image was specified picking up both
partitions.

I can get this image to load back onto an IDE drive Ive
got sitting here just fine.
Both partitions are present.

But of course Im now getting the 0x0000007b inaccessible
boot device style error.

What I need to know is :
- is it possible to get the nt4 install working again ?
(from what Ive found so far, its a registry issue that
needs correcting)
or
- is there a way I can upgrade the nt4 to win2k WITHOUT
being able able to boot into NT4
(I know by design this isnt possible by default, but im
hoping there might be an undocumented method to do this.)

Either one of these solutions would be just fine.
There is a lot of data and 3rd party applications on the
existing setup that I really cant afford to lose as they
all require very specialised install and config routines.
(which of course arent documented)

I really need to get this all sorted out as soon as
possible.

Any assistance given will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Michael

Just to give you an indication of what I have tried so
far :

- created the 3 nt4 boot disk and ran thru the repair
options without the erd options
- created the 3 nt4 boot disk and ran thru the repair
options with the erd options

What would be really great is if there was a way of doing
something like this found in KB article Q271965 but for
nt4.

I had a similar failure of an Nt4 server, I got ERD
Commandar from Winternals. Basicly it,s a xp pro front
end that allows you to open move delete files, and even
make registry changes.
