The NVIDIA 6800GS 256mb card is tempting.
Is there a comparable ATI AGP card, in performance, in the same
$180-$225 range?

You just missed your chance by a few days. Micro Center was
selling the X850 XT for $249 less $50 rebate. Final cost $199.
Now that their special is over, the price is back up to almost
$400.

That explains the rash of somewhat cheap X850XT's AGPon ebay. I just bought
one off ebay for 290.00, I had wondered where the guy had got them (he was
selling more than one X850XT AGP) so cheap as I couldn't find anything on
line for anywhere near that price.
I don't even know where Microcenter is, but I'm going to have to find out.

Unfortunately the GTO2 is PCIe-only, and the original GTO isn't guaranteed
to have 16 pipes, depending on which GPU was slapped on the board.

Indeed, it's very tempting, for a good reason. nVidia has a card that offers
6800GT-level performance for just over $200. ATi doesn't have anything
comparable unless you find the odd X800XT or X850XT on sale for cheap. Just
go ahead and buy the 6800GS, preferably with a factory overclock like the
BFG or eVGA. :-)

Doesn't an X800XL have similar performance to the GS? Same price range,
I think.

Nope, do some creative googling and you'll find some AGP samples as
well. I browsed the net a few weeks ago tryig to find something for my
P4 system and bumped into some very interesting models, the prices were
not so bad either.

Oh, most of the interesting ones were for sale in Germanese web stores.
Not a big deal for me living in EU but for you it might make things more
complicated.

Yes. However, when you actually get down to buying one, X800XL AGP cards are
nowhere nearly as widespread, so it's much easier to find a good deal on the
6800GS. Do a search on Pricegrabber and you'll see 6800GS cards left, right
and center.

BTW, there's no reason to stick with ATi. I've owned a Geforce3 Ti and now a
Radeon 9800 Pro. Both companies are pretty competent nowadays. Board mfrs
like eVGA and BFG offer lifetime warranties and endorse overclocking.

As a side question, how do warranties typically work in Europe? Are they
honored across borders, as long as the purchase was made with an EU member
nation?
