upgrading mobo

I plan to replace my motherboard. I am told this will freak XP out, that I
need to try to do a repair install before even trying to boot to the drive,
and that I might as well go ahead and do a clean install to forego problems.
My question is: in any of these scenarios can I use a drive image (Drive
Image 7) to restore my system without having to go through many hours of
download time getting system updates and virus definitions? Thanks.

A repair install really isn't that painful. Once it's running, it doesn't
ask many questions, reboots on its own. Depending on the speed of your
components, it's about 45 minutes of computer time, maybe 10 minutes of your
time (five of that spent squinting at the stupid product key). And it's a
good think to know how to do.

Afterward, you'll have to reapply all the patches, but it's better than
formatting and reinstalling all of it, unless you like to install software,
just for fun :-)

Doug;
You need to perform a Repair Installation to properly detect the new
hardware.
An image will not have the new hardware so it will not work any more
than the original.

This CD may make reinstalling the updates easier:

For what it is worth: When I moved from one Sony Desktop to an other one
(different mobo, different processor), I played it lucky and just moved
my HD over (I had backups of all partitions on it). The machine rebooted
several times after detecting new hardware but at the end of the day, my
system works perfectly and everything is normal.

So I guess, there is no harm in trying the easy way ... if you have
adequate back-up.
