Have tried to upgrade memory from 128mb by adding another
256mb. Computer recognises its there but will not load up
giving the message Windows Protection Error. On removal I
have been able to restore back to normal. Any hints?
Computer is Gateway running Windows 98 700mhz.

The RAM stick does not match the old stick. Try just the
new stick to see if it will work.
Use the memory selector at www.crucial.com to see what you
need, probably PC100 or PC133.

Get AIDA32 (Google will find it for you) and it will scan
your system and report details about what you have
installed, who made it (Gateway assembles computers) and
such.

Greetings --

It's absolutely essential that any new RAM module be compatible
with both the motherboard and any other RAM module(s) in the system.
Additionally, there are sometimes jumper switches on older
motherboards that need to be reset for the new RAM configuration.
Consult your motherboard's manual or its manufacturer's support web
site.
