Upgrading HardDrive

I am trying to copy my XP boot drive to a larger capacity
drive and it doesn't work. Is there any limitation in XP
that would prevent me from doing this. I just want a
larger C: drive. Trying to go from 30GB to 120GB.

XP has no limitations for your disk size. Computer's BIOS must be able to
see the larger size hard drives. Also, since the hard drive is a 120GB, you
do not really need to have 48-bit LBA support (HD > 137GB), but it does not
hurt to have it. Also, make sure youhave XP SP1 installed.

How did you copy the old drive to your new drive. XP "cop" and "xcopy"
commands do not copy the Master Boot Record (MBR) successfully. You woukld
need Norton Ghost 2003 or the disk cloning utility provided my the 120 GB
hard drive manufacturer.

Sounds like you missed following a simple step. I'm

assuming that your new drive came with software and some
directions. Clear your mind and start from scratch. Read
the manual carefully and double check everything. Start
with the basics. Is the drive jumpered correctly? is it
set to slave? Because I think you have to transfer your
files to a slave drive before you make it your new
master.

I dunno.... I tried MaxBlast which came with my Maxtor
drive, and it didn't clone - it just made an image file, good only
for backup/restore and not bootable. Maxtor's tech reps even
say MaxBlast is "not very good". I had better luck with Drive
Image 2002. See my posting entitled "Multi-boot Windows XP
without special software".
