Greetings to all XP users.

Here is the scenario:
What if I wish to upgrade my Hdisk from 40Gb to 180Gb? I
have updated XP SP1 to the utmost using Windows update
plus I have updated all my other software like Office XP,
Netscape 7.1, Windows Media Player, AOL Instant
Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, Real One Player,
Quicktime etc . . . reformatting is like starting all
over again with downloads and updates.

My question:
Is there a way to change hard disk without a clean format
and downloading updates again? like cloning hard disk
WITHOUT a third party software like Norton.

You'll need to make an "image" of your old hard drive and then
transfer the "image" to your new drive. To accomplish this,
you'll need to purchase a third-party program:

Norton Ghost 2003
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/ghost/ghost_personal/

or

PowerQuest Drive Image
http://www.powerquest.com/driveimage/

You may also wish to visit the support website of the manufacturer of your
hard drive and see if they have a free utility program that you can use to
accomplish this task. For example, if you have a new Western Digital drive,
you can download their free Data Lifeguard Tools which includes "drive-to-drive
copy capability" (Ref: http://support.wdc.com/download/).

Thanks for your prompt reply, Nicholas.

Will this be an activation issue if Windows
XP "discovers" its new hardware?

You'll most likely not have an activation issue by just changing the hard
drive.
Depending on the hard drive manufacturer, many have utilities for doing
exactly what you want to do.
You just place the new drive in on the Secondary IDE channel.(you won't need
the CD for now)
Boot the computer from a Win9x boot floppy.
Use their utility on a floppy to copy the old hard drive contents to the new
drive.
Check the manufacturer's web site.

Thanks Rich for your message.

With the floppy disk method you suggested, does this mean
I don't need the third party software Norton ghost 2003?
What you are suggesting is quite simple, but great.

again, thanks.
