hi.
i have a notebook with windows xp pro sp2 installed.
can i buy any version of vista (upgrade), including home basic and home
premium, or i can only upgrade to business or more?
thnx in advance

You can buy any upgrade version to my knowlage. Vista will just check for a
previous Windows install. You can even perform a clean install by using a
workaround. I cant come up with the link on the top of my head but a simple
Google search will give you the guide.

The recommended upgrade path to maintain the same networking capabilities of
XP Pro is Biz or Ultimate. If you chose any of the Home products, you will
have to do a clean install (not an in-place upgrade). This may be okay with
your if you don't anticipate needing your machine to be a member of a Windows
Domain.

The pc is not member of a domain. it actually is a stand alone pc.
i read that vista's upgrade versions don't allow to do a clean-install,
because they search for an already installed version of xp.
so, how can i do a clean install in this case?
thnx

Easy, you can install the version of Vista you bought from the upgrade CD
without entering the CD key, hence getting a 30 day trail. After that you
can start the "upgrade" from within Vista itself, hence upgrading a
unactivated Vista trail to Vista, but this time enter the CD key and
activate. Its pretty simple, Vista does not check for Windows XP or 2000,
just for Windows. :I

almost unbelievable...but for sure i trust you :)
thnx a lot

Indeed, its been a big debate as to why Microsoft included this option as
they clearly did not forget it or miss it. If you need clearer and more
detailed instructions (you know, the kind that tell you "Press "Open CD
tray" and put in the CD") you can always search the net for a few minutes.

Why would he need to do all that since he already has a working XP system to
"upgrade". He said... "i have a notebook with windows xp pro sp2 installed".
Granted, it would have to be a "clean" upgrade, but it should be routine.
The MS link clearly provides for this type of "clean" upgrade. No tricks are
required, AFAIK.

I believe what you are referring to is using an upgrade-priced version of
Vista to install on a blank disk. Yes?
