Our firm currently utilizes an enhanced normal.dot that includes button macros, additional auto-text and other features. We are migrating to new workstations running Windows XP with Word 2002. We plan to load the current normal.dot on each new workstation. Are there any issues to be aware of
Thanks

Hi MKG,

Just one "serious" issue:

IMHO, you should not use Normal.dot for company tools....

Open Word;
Menu Tools > Options;
Select the File Locations tab;
Note what the paths are for User Template (Normal.dot should be there);
and for the Start-up folder;
(If there isn't one, create one, select Start-up and click on Modify to
browse and select a folder, you may create one too if you want);
Close Word;
Make a copy of your Normal.dot with Windows Explorer;
Call it something like; Company Global.dot;
Just to be safe, make a backup copy of your Normal.dot;
Delete the existing Normal.dot;
Word will create a blank new one when it restarts next;
Place the newly created "Company Global.dot" in the start up folder;
Start word;
You should have access to everything Normal.dot use to give you.

Now, all users can use the same Start up folder, and all users will have
access to the tools in the Company Global.dot that used to be the
Normal.dot. If you modify it, you do not have to go around every single
machine to update every one's Normal.dot... Also, when you upgrade from one
version to the next, you just move bring you Global templates in the new
version, and forget about bringing Normal.dot. It has been my experience
that it is much safer and more stable to use Global templates for company
wide tools than to use Normal.dot.

Make a good back-up copy of the normal.dot.

I agree with Jean-Guy. Sharing normal.dot is a very bad idea and can in a
worst case prevent all your users from working. Use a global add-in to add
functionality or document templates to impose standards. Leave normal.dot
for user configuration.
