upgrading from windows nt4 to windows 2000

Is it possible to upgrade from windows nt4 to 2000 without
rebuilding my pc?

I believe so, but note that if you have older hardware, you'll want to make
sure it's all compatible/has appropriate W2k drivers.

Also, upgrades in place are rarely the best plan. You will get a lot better
performance if you back up your data and do a clean install. I think it's
worth the extra time/effort.
