I was trying to run the update program for Windows 2000.
After typing in the key code it started creating an update
log. After about 5 minutes of very little activity my
computer crashed. I have tried to start the program again
but it gives me the following error:

The option to upgrade will not be available at this time
because setup was unable to load the file

C:\windows\upgdlls\w95upg.dll\win9xupg\w95upg.dll

The system cannot find the file specified.

Any ideas to help a non-IT guy overcome this and be able
to upgrade from ME to 2000?

There is no upgrade path from WinME to Windows 2000

1.) Means you can't upgrade from WinME to Windows 2000

2.) To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom;
change to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe
(from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify (your win98 CD-Rom will work
for this). Then the install will proceed.

| What does this mean? Do I need to upgrade to 98 before I
| can then upgrade to 2000?

Nanpook,

You can't upgrade from WinME to Win2000,
because Win2000 predates WinME.

(Same applies for upgrading from WinME to Win98.)

You can, however upgrade from Win98 to Win2000,
but it's not advisable because it causes a whole bunch of problems down the
road.

Best way to install Win2000 is a "Clean Install"...
....in other words... wipe your hard disk clean by re-partitioning and
reformatting it using the Win2000 CD or another computer running Win2000.

If what you're trying to do is install an "upgrade package" of Win2000 (if
such a thing exists) then Dave Patrick's instructions are what you need to
follow.

Good Luck... & Have Fun!

Chris
