Is it possible to use the serial number/original CD from
Windows 95 CD to upgrade to Windows XP?

Thanks,

Russ

You must use a retail XP upgrade CD and have the W95 CD just
to insert when asked for the proof for upgrade.

It will only do a clean install, but W95 CD is proof for the
use of the W XP (Home or Pro).

If you mean can you use a retail Windows 95 CD as qualifying media for an
upgrade and do a clean install, the answer is yes. If you mean can you
upgrade over a Windows 95 install, the answer is no.

Now, if your machine was made for Windows 95 or in that period, before you
consider moving to XP you should run the compatibility Wizard. However, if
you run it with 95 installed on the machine, it may just tell you this is
not an approved upgrade path and stop. If you have something later on the
machine, even Windows 98, you can at least run the wizard and get an idea of
what needs to be updated before you install XP.

You can download the wizard from the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp

If this system was running Windows 95, I strongly recommend you buy another
computer with XP as opposed to this venture. If you are determined, you'll
need to update all your drivers, if no XP drivers exist for a specified
device you'll need to get new devices, it's likely most or all of your
applications will need to be updated to the latest versions. All disk
tools, antivirus, CD burning and firewall software will need to be replaced
as pre-XP versions are not compatible.

My main question is if it violates any license agreement
for me to do the clean install and if the cd/license
number is requested will it work. I had a older Windows
95 computer that I retired and had never upgraded the
version of Windows. I came accross a PII 450mhz which is
only lacking an operating system, so I wanted to use a
Windows XP Home Upgrade as a fresh install.

Thanks, Russ

The only product key that will be asked for is the new XP CD
key. The W95 CD just needs to be seen during the install
process.
You might have problems with the upgrade if some of the
hardware on the PII is not up to XP requirements. But try
it, it should work. You have 30 days before you must
activate XP, don't be in a hurry to do that, until you find
it works to your satisfaction.

Don't go on-line without turning the XP Internet Connection
Firewall ON. When you create an Internet account, there is
a checkbox to turn it on (it is off by default). You can
check your connection properties/advanced tab to also turn
it on.

Using an XP upgrade CD to do a clean install is legal. Setup will not ask
for the 95 CD key, it will ask for the CD at which point you will need to
place it in the drive.
