Don't know if I'm in the right place but I've been trying to load XP Pro
over my Win ME.
I did try formatting my HD & starting from scratch but with the same problem
(I then had to reload ME)

I get so far then it stops with a message

A Problem Has Been Detected .... Restart your pc .....
Technical Information:
***Stop: 0x0000007b (0xF898463c, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

That's as far as I get.
I have a SATA drive if that's a help, as was suggested by my friend.

If I'm in the wrong group, please point me in the right direction.

Thank You For Any Help.

1. Have you run the Compatibility program on the XP disk?
2. Are you loading the SATA drivers when the Setup offers you the chance
(by hitting F6)?

I received your email but my response came back undeliverable. In any case
please reply to the group. Yes, ME is on the upgrade list for XP, so the
message sometimes appears when you are upgrading from a factory installed
version of ME. See:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;319424

However, if you have a Windows ME cd (not a restore cd), do a clean install
with an XP Upgrade version, it will ask you at some point to insert the cd
for a previous version of Windows and should at that point continue the
installation. I have seen mention of problems upgrading ME in place and in
fact don't recommend it.

The XP cd does provide a program for saving your files and settings (Files
and Setting Transfer Wizard) before the upgrade and then reinstalling them
afterwards. You will have to reinstall your programs from original media.

Doing a "clean install" of XP should be fairly easy, easier than doing a ME
to XP upgrade with ME files left in place.

(1) Does your hardware meet the minimum requirements of XP? Probably does
if you have SATA disks, since that means the motherboard is relatively new.
Still, it is worth checking. XP does not have native support for most ISA
devices. It seems to support many PCI and AGP devices.

(1b) Disconnect all peripherals, except the monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
Disconnect all internal hard drives and removeable drives (e.g., ZIP),
except the one upon which you plan to install XP. Of course, leave a single
CDROM (or DVD or CD-RW) drive installed and the floppy drive.

(2a) As for the SATA hard drive. Assuming that it is the only internal
hard drive, be sure that the BIOS is set to see it. If you were able to
format it using some tool from the disk maker (Seagate, Maxtor, Western
Digital, etc), then the BIOS must be able to see it. As a test you could
format it as FAT32 and boot the PC from a DOS floppy. Try somehting simple
like "DIR". Any number of DOS floppy images can be downloaded from
www.bootdisk.com. I suggest 98SE.

(2b) Also check that the disk is an allowable bootable media. You may need
to read your motherboard manual on how to designate a non-IDE hard drive as
a possible bootable media. I am sure that is possible, assuming that SATA
is part of the motherboard. If SATA is via a separate PCI card, then I am
less sure about what to do.

(2c) Assuming that the BIOS is configured to see the disk and to boot from
it, then you need to have the SATA drives available on a floppy. Very early
in the XP installation it will say hit F6 for third-party drivers (like SCSI
and RAID). SATA is in this same category. Note that the drivers must be on
a floppy, since the XP installer will not allow you to browse to anywhere
else, like a CD. Be sure you have the latest drivers.

(2d) If the hard drive is > 128 Gig, check with the disk manufacturer on how
to install XP. XP has a problem with drives (not just partitions) that are
larger. XP with SP-1 (or higher) can handle such disks, but only after
48-bit LBA is enabled by a registry tweak. It is not the default for XP.

Good luck.

A STOP 0x0000007b error is an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE problem.

As Colin Barnhorst said you will need to add the SATA drivers during
the XP install.

Before you start the install, get the XP drivers from the CD that came
with the hard drive or from the hard drive manufacturer's web site and
copy them to a folder named C:\SATA on the hard drive. Press F6 when
the XP installer asks you about drivers and tell it to look in the
C:\SATA folder for them.

Good luck

Most systems with SATA drives include drivers on one or more 1.44MB
floppies. Check to see if you have these. If so, that is what you insert
when requested by the installer.

Just To Make Double Sure, Once Again I Tried To Load It Again.
I Did Press F6 And Load The Disk That Came With My SATA Drive
I Even Went To The Seagate Web Site And Got The Updated Drivers.........

Does the Seagate website have a diagnostic utility for their SATA
drives? I know they have one for IDE drives but am not sure if it
supports the SATA models.

If they have one then download it and test your SATA drive to see if
their is a problem with the drive or the controller.

A possible work around for your problem might be to:
1. Install a conventional IDE drive and remove the SATA drive.
2. Install Windows XP on the IDE drive.
3. Install the SATA drive and use disk cloning software to copy the
contents of the IDE drive to the SATA drive.
4. Remove the IDE drive.

If the drive is working properly then this should get you going.

Good luck
