I just upgraded my computer from ME to WIN2000
Professional NT. Everything went well until I tried to
go online. It is not recognizing my modem. It says I
have no modem. What can I do?
I'm pretty certain that you have a "winmodem" -- one of those cheap
abominations whose functions are performed by the operating system instead of
by the modem itself. It was obviously designed to work with Win98, but with
W2K. You have two choices:
A) go on line from a friend's computer, go to the website of the modem
manufacturer, and find the most recent W2K driver for that modem. You will
have to know the exact model, which means you first have to open up the box,
pull the modem card, and read whatever it says on whatever labels) it has. Be
warned that it is quite likely that there will be no such driver available,
as the modem is clearly an older one, and there's not much incentive in
writing drivers for old modems - especially since people expect these drivers
to cost nothing.
B) buy a real modem (I prefer external models, as you can plug them into any
future upgraded computer), and plug it in as specified in its instructions.
W2K will recognise it. You may have to set its initialisation string, but
that's not likely.
Either way, you will have to run the dialer wizard to provide phone numbers
etc.
