upgrading from home to professional

Help!

I currently have Windows XP Home edition. I had to
purchase XP Professional for school. When I'm trying
to "Upgrade" from Home to Professional, it appears to be
working properly...until...

During the setup process, it reboots my computer. As the
computer is starting back up, all I get is the WINDOWS XP
start-up screen with the scrolling status bar. It stays
on and nothing happens. I let it sit for over an hour
today and still nothing...

any suggestions?
 
Hi Matt,

When I looked through troubleshooting articles on upgrading, many problems
are specific to the computer type. So, I'll tell you how to look for the
answer yourself because you have more information about your computer and
what it's doing...
1. Go to http://search.microsoft.com/search/search.aspx?st=a&View=en-us
2. Fill in appropriate terms in the keyword boxes. (For example, in "All of
these words:", you could search on "XP Home Professional upgrade"
3. In the "Choose a search category:" dropdown menu, select "Support and
Troubleshooting", and then click Go.
 
One major problem you're going to have assuming this is a new hardware
purchase.

You're currently running XP HE SP1. The only version of Pro in the retail
channels is Pro RTM. Modern hardware has devices that require SP1. When you
install Pro RTM, you're back leveling the required drivers and loosing
required device support.

'Tain't no easy answer except to approach the network admins and inform them
that HE works perfectly fine on a domain in work station mode and dump the
problem on their laps. Since it's school, they need to learn how to do this
anyway.
