Upgrading from BCM 2003

We have been using BCM for Office 2003.
We have several hundred business contacts.
Now I have upgraded to Office 2007 with BCM.
In order to do this, I had to first remove the
old BCM. Otherwise, Outlook would not start.

Now I can't seem to find the old database that
worked with BCM for Office 2003. Is there an
upgrade path, or do I have to retype all the
hundreds of contacts in again?

When you startup Outlook 2007 with BCM , BCM should try to detect your old
2003 database as part of initial configuration.

This did not happen. What happened instead was that
Outlook refused to start, sent a message to Microsoft,
and then quit. This was the case on two separate clients.

In order to install BCM 2007, I uninstalled BCM2003.

Is there a way to do a manual upgrade, now that BCM 2007
is installed?

Please verify that BCM for Outlook 2003 is uninstalled and BCM for Outlook
2007 is installed. You can do that by going to Add/Remove program and check
Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 entry.

I would recommend following steps:
1. Right Click Outlook in Start Menu and Click Properties.
2. Click Show Profiles
3. Choose the Outlook Profile you are using and Click Properties.
4. Click Data Files, look for Business Contact Manager entry and click
Remove. It seems Outlook profile might have stale entry from Outlook BCM
2003.
5. Now close these dialogs
6. Start Outlook.
7. Click Help->Configure Business Contact Manager (if this menu is not
available then you might not have BCM for Outlook 2007 installed)
8. It will launch the wizard. Click the adavnced option. It will give you
option to choose your old database. The process will migrate the database to
new format and also save a backup of old in case you need to revert back,
9. Complete the wizard.

I hope this helps.

Worked great right up until the last step.
The option to choose the old database only gave the possibility
of choosing the new database MSSmallBusiness.
I think the old database was called MSBusinessContactManager.
So basically, I can't retrieve the old data.

The BCM database is typically in this directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data
\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager

Is there a file named MSBusinessContactManager there?

Neither BCM not its Setup/Install ever delete databases.

Well, in the end we gave up.
It turns out that by some luck I had done an export
of the BCM database into .bcm format just a week ago.
So I was able to import this .bcm file into BCM 2007.
The 50 or so customers we have since then we'll just
hand-enter again. Only a couple of hours work.

But even if you're right about the location of the old
database, it wouldn't do any good, since 2007 does not
provide a way to import old database versions. No upgrade
path at all, as far as I can see.

My reseller has been in touch with Microsoft here, but
so far they have no advice for us on what went wrong.
