Is it possible to do a clean install, with a windows xp
upgrade disk, we have 98 currently on a machine & want to
do a clean install rather than just a upgrade!

Thanks..

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition(s), then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.

Greetings --

It is possible to perform a clean installation using an Upgrade
CD.

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. The Upgrade CD checks to see if a qualifying OS
is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks you to insert the
installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately, an OEM
"Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must have a
true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and *.cab
files, or the "\i386" folder of WinNT/2K.

Possible, and also a good idea -- and a better idea than an upgrade over
the top of Windows 98.
Boot from the Setup CD, and choose New Installation (Advanced)
Early in the process, you'll be prompted to insert your Windows 98 CD. XP
Setup will read a few files from it, and the rest of the process runs
normally.
Before running the upgrade, however, make sure that you have:
a. Completely backed up any data, e-mail files, address book(s) and
configuration settings from the machine onto CDs or onto tape;
b. Downloaded XP-specific drivers for all the hardware that you plan to
connect to the machine, especially if the hardware is a few years old. Visit
the web site of the respective manufacturers. Have the drivers ready to run
from a CD.
