Upgrading from 98

I would like to acquire a newer computer but am advised
that the newer processors will not support W98. so,
thinking of XP (home version), the MS Office suite, etc.
What files do I need to save so that my current apps, will
run under the new op sys? How do I go about it (step-by-
step for dummies)? The whole issue of re-establishing my
system creates anxiety - what nasty surprises can I expect?
 
It's nonsense newer processors don't support Windows 98.
I prefer using Windows 98SE even when I have Windows XP Home also on my
quite new computer.
BTW I'm still using Office 97 in Windows XP.

But things are moving on and support for Win98 will disappear quite fast
and maybe when you buy a new computer it's best to upgrade to Windows
XP at the same time.

I think you should start reading the pages MicroSoft has about upgrading
to Windows XP.

You've been advised incorrectly. Every new processor supports
Windows 98.

*If* you decide to get XP (and although I think you probably
should, you *don't* have to), you simply reinstall your old apps
under XP. Most, if not all, of them will run fine, but to be
sure, run the free Upgrade Advisor at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp

The only files you need to save are data files.
