I am having alot of problems with 98(corrupt and missing
files) and have tried evrything. I was also interested in
upgrading to XP. My problem is that I would like to keep
my personal files, but obviously make improvements to my
system files. Is there any way to install XP so I wouldn't
format my disk and lose my information?

Yep, if you upgrade to XP there's a "save my settings" wizard, to keep your
files intact. I did it, some already-installed programmes were ok, others
needed a re-install (or the odd one i had to find an xp specific version)
but it kept my settings and data intact. hope this helps.

Before upgrading any existing Windows installation, it would be prudent to
run the Upgrade Advisor for Windows XP. This tool will report what hardware
or software may be incompatible with Windows XP. If you follow the Upgrade
Advisor's recommendations, you should not have any problem upgrading to
Windows XP.

If you fail to utilize the Upgrade Advisor, you may run into incompatibility issues.
Just inserting the Windows XP Upgrade CD in the CD Drive and selecting
"upgrade" is not going to give you the desired result. You must "prepare and
plan" your computer before beginning the upgrade process.

It is imperative that you have the latest BIOS update installed. Visit the support
website of the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard for instructions
on updating your computer's BIOS.

Also, physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware devices,
especially USB devices. Uninstall any antivirus program, too!

Most importantly, it would be prudent to perform a backup of
any data files you have, just in case a problem should occur.

Important: When you are ready to upgrade to Windows XP,
make sure to select the default "Upgrade" option
during the initial setup phase. Do not select the
alternative "New Installation" option!

I recommend preparing for a clean install but first upgrade over 98.
Click on the link below, or copy and paste the link into the address box
if using the web based newsgroup.
For upgrading to XP Home or Pro, see the links below.

First be quite sure the machine is powerful enough (say a 350MHz 192MB
RAM 5 GB free hard disk as real minimum, more better).

Then Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

You would need to have a good backup whatever you do - in spite of what
people may say, the result *may* remove a lot of causes of corruption,
simply because it removes almost all the system. But if that is arising
from dicey hardware no amount of upgrading will help, and there is
always a danger of things breaking down completely in the process
